Bury South MP, Ivan Lewis, visited Tier 1 recently to congratulate us for winning the Queen’s Award for Enterprise.
During the visit, Mr Lewis was interested to find out more about the unique partnership we have formed with HMP Forest Bank, Salford and the charity ANTZ. Tier 1’s ground-breaking prison workshop programme has seen more than 130 offenders emerging from prison with vital qualifications in IT recycling, helping them give back to society by finding employment and apprenticeships thanks to their new life skills and work ethic.
IT equipment that has failed or cannot be refurbished in our warehouse is taken to our recycling workshop at HMP Forest Bank where prisoners dismantle the kit into component parts, avoiding the need to send any IT waste to landfill. The waste-processing workshop enables Tier 1 to process significant amounts of IT waste every month by providing a well established, cost efficient processing operation.
As well as celebrating our success, we discussed wider issues including the potential impact of Brexit on British businesses and Mr Lewis gave us a fascinating insight into the latest activity in Westminster.
Jonathan Rose, Tier 1 Managing Director, said:
“We are delighted that our local MP made time in his busy schedule to spend the afternoon at Tier 1. He was genuinely interested in the business, our people and the work we are doing and we had an interesting discussion about business and politics. It was a pleasure having Ivan here, and we thank him for his time.”
